Russian desman is a Tertiary Period relict endemic to the Eastern Europe. The species is listed in the IUCN Red List (Category - VU), Russian Red List and Nizhny Novgorod Red List. In the Nizhny Novgorod Region in 2013 local population of desman was examined. The study comprised three floodplains of several rivers: lower Kerzhenets, where desman was reintroduced by Nijegorodskoe Zavolje Natural Reserve program, Oka floodplain throughout Nizhny Novgorod region, housing major part of desman population and the left bank of Volga near city of Niznhy Novgorod where desman was not observed since 1982. The study involved 170 bodies of water with total bank line of 320.96 km. Total populations estimates according to the study are 1500 individuals. Oka floodplain population is about 1300. Smaller population inhabits left Volga bank (12 individuals reported) despite high economic activity in the area. The reintroduced population of Kerzhenets river number 17 individuals (1% of total regional population). Although the reintroduction results are positive and Kerzhenets population area grows, population shows no tendency to increase. Limited factors are still to be identified which requires more study. The desman inhabits river floodplains along with the muskrat and the beaver, using their dens for cover. Presence of the muskrat in the same area is not a limiting factor for the desman. The status of desman in the regions is still critical. Constant monitoring of both reintroduced and natural populations is essential for desman conservation.
