The article makes an attempt to discuss the reasons why the Russian desman does not breed in captivity. This species lives in the wild in unstable temperature conditions, when the most extreme temperature variations occur in spring and autumn. This is due to the spring flood and autumn sharp fluctuations in day/night temperatures. At this time peaks of desman reproduction occur in nature. We assume, that comfort temperature conditions in captivity result in the lack of breeding of this species
